The Neptune Caves of Alghero
A Hidden Gem Between Sea and Rock

Located within the Capo Caccia promontory in the stunning Riviera del Corallo, the Neptune Caves are one of the most fascinating natural wonders of Sardinia. This karst cave system extends for about 4 km (although only a portion is accessible to visitors) and offers breathtaking scenery featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground lake called Lago Lamarmora, one of the largest in Europe within a cave.
A Journey Through the History of the Neptune Caves
Discovered in the 18th century by local fishermen, the Neptune Caves owe their name to Roman mythology, in honor of the god of the sea. Over the centuries, these limestone formations have been shaped by water erosion, creating spectacular natural columns and unique underground environments. Among the most remarkable chambers are the Royal Palace Hall, with its imposing limestone formations, and the Ruins Hall, which seems to preserve a piece of history frozen in time.
How to Reach the Neptune Caves
There are two ways to access this hidden paradise:
- On foot, via the famous Escala del Cabirol – A fascinating but challenging route that requires descending (and later climbing back up) 654 steps carved into the rock, winding along the cliffside and offering an unparalleled view of the sea at Capo Caccia.
- By sea, with boats departing from Alghero’s port – A more comfortable and scenic option, ideal for those who prefer to avoid the climb and instead admire the cliffs from the water before entering the cave directly from its sea-level entrance.
Opening Hours and Reservations
The Neptune Caves are open year-round, but opening hours vary by season. During the summer, visits typically take place between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM, while in winter, closing time is earlier. It is highly recommended to book in advance, especially during peak season, to avoid long waits. Tickets can be purchased online or directly on-site, whether opting for the land access route or the boat trip.
Distance from Alghero
The Neptune Caves are located about 24 km from Alghero, which takes approximately 30-40 minutes by car along a scenic road passing through the Porto Conte Natural Park. Along the way, visitors can admire breathtaking landscapes and discover extraordinary locations such as Torre del Porticciolo, a fascinating area immersed in Mediterranean vegetation, making it an unmissable stop for nature lovers.
An Experience Not to Be Missed
Visit the Neptune Caves to immerse yourself in a unique underground world, where time seems to have stopped among rock formations sculpted over centuries and mesmerizing light effects. Whether you are a trekking enthusiast or a lover of the sea, this natural wonder will provide an unforgettable experience, just a short distance from Alghero and the stunning landscapes of northwestern Sardinia.
